Everyone used to give me advice as to how to back up my computer in case of a disaster, telling me that I needed a Disaster Recovery plan . My computer had even crashed before, but I was able to get a full Data Backup Offsite because the motherboard hadn’t been wiped and all I needed to do was transfer it to another computer. It cost me some money, but I did it in the end and all my files were fine. I hadn’t even needed to save anything to disc.
Then the worst-case scenario happened to me and I’m still kicking myself.
I finally published a novel last year and it was great since years and years of hard work went into it. My publisher asked me to sign a contract for 2 more books. I was working on the rewrite of the second late at night when there was a power surge and everything blacked out all around the neighborhood. I’m hardly afraid of the dark and had some flashlights so I figured I’d be all right. I had the whole manuscript saved on my computer and since it was running when everything went out I figured once the hard drive rebooted itself it’d be fine. I cried about it for a day or two, the situation was as bad as I could have imagined, but there was nothing I could do to remedy it so I moved on .
The next day, I started all over again and, hopefully, the manuscript will be even better this time around. But I am never letting that happen to me again. For all I know, that could have been a Pulitzer prize-winning manuscript or the next best bestseller and then I’d have lost it all due to not having a better Data Storage Device or some type of Data Backup Offsite.
