Facts About Vitamins And Minerals

October 08, 2008 By: blogger Category: Vitamin Supplements No Comments →

Do you have any idea if you have what you need even though you hear a lot about vitamins and minerals? You probably are, for the most part. However, there are times when we don’t, and this direct us to a very interesting theory. My mom gave me a book she read a long time ago, and it said that people who do not get enough vitamins and minerals each day not only get sick much easier, they also walk around with abnormal cravings.

After I read the book, it made me think about a teacher I had in sixth grade. This guy was your classic teacher, though he was not very animated. Quite often he would eat the chalk he had in the class room. I never believed there had to be a reason why he did it even though we thought it was funny at the time. Could it have something to do with the quantity of vitamins and minerals in his diet? I have no idea, but this book told me it was. It’s an interesting theory. But would it makes us eat chalk if our body craves for vitamins and minerals it is not getting?

So this might be the explanation why you crave certain foods. That’s certainly not as awful as eat chalk, but this might elucidate odd cravings, especially during pregnancy. Expecting women require more vitamins and minerals than anybody, and they must to be sure they get them. Do they have to ask for Italian dressing and hotdogs in the middle of the night if they aren’t getting the vitamins and minerals for themselves as well as what they need for their growing baby? I don’t know.

The aging progression in our bodies is an on going thing each day of our lives. Bringing the clock to a standstill is out of the questions so we need to take care of ourselves on a daily basis. It is a known fact that as we age we need a dietary supplements and vitamins to substitute the declining bodily chemicals and substances.

Dietary supplements are sometimes needed because as we age our diets change and we eat less. Sometimes we eat more. As our skin and digestive system starts to change, so do our vitamin levels. Not having the right vitamins can cause cancers and chronic diseases to develop. We all need to understand the vitamins that we need and how they will help keep us stay healthy and safe. In all, we have two different kinds of vitamins, which one is the fat-soluble [A, D, E, K] and the second one is the water-soluble [B, C, P].

The farmers are putting fertilizer and chemicals to make their crop larger and better and with all these chemicals, it lowers the vitamins that you get from your diet. Not eating the right diet or not enough can cause your vitamin level to drop. Some things you need to know are that Vitamin D is produced from the sun and the older we get the less we are outside, so by taking vitamin D it can help the brittle bones in our body and make them stronger.

If you are not sure what ones come in liquid form ask your doctor and he can help you decide what you need and tell you if they are in liquid form or not. Some pills can’t be cut up or crushed because they lose their strength, so stay healthy and look for the liquid type.

Turmeric Powder For Good Health

September 18, 2008 By: blogger Category: Vitamin Supplements No Comments →

Curcumin extract is a well kept health secret. It’s the primary curcuminoid of the Indian spice, Turmeric. It’s a very potent yellow color, and is known for a plethora of positive medical benefits. Turmeric is known for for many great medical properties, including tumor prevention, antioxidation, relieving arthritic pain, and helping with amyloids. Curcumin may also have anti-inflammatory properties. This same little spice has also been shown to be effective in treating malaria, prevention of cervical cancer, and may interfere with the replication of HIV & Herpes!

Turmeric is a member of the Curcuma botanical group, which is part of the ginger family of herbs, the Zingiberaceae. The root and rhizome (underground stem) of the Curcuma longa L. plant is crushed and powdered into ground Turmeric. Ground Turmeric is used worldwide as a seasoning as the main ingredient in curry, and is the source of Curcumin.

There is also circumstantial evidence that curcumin improves mental functions, a survey of 3023 people who ate yellow curry, between the ages of 60 and 93, showed that those who ate the sauce once every six months had higher MMSE scores then those who did not. From a scientific standpoint this does not show whether the curry caused it, or people who had healthy habits also tended to eat curry!

Curcumin is the main biologically active phytochemical compound of Turmeric. It is extracted, concentrated, standardized and researched. Curcumin, which gives the yellow color to turmeric, was first isolated almost two centuries ago, and its structure as diferuloylmethane was determined in 1910. Extensive research within the last half a century has proven that its renowned range of medicinal properties, once associated with Turmeric, are due to Curcumin.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that curcumin much like learning has a positive affect on neurogenesis in the hippocampus and concentrations of BDNF.

I like to order my Curcumin supplements from Purebulk.com. They’re a smalltime supplier of 50g to 25kg quantities of nutritional powder supplements, at wholesale prices.

Low Carbs Vegetarian Diet To Lose Weight

September 14, 2008 By: blogger Category: Vitamin Supplements No Comments →

How does your diet look? What is the balance of carbohydrates and protein in your diet. What do you have for Breakfast - Mid Morning - Lunch - Mid Afternoon - Evening Meal - After evening meal? Are you following a vegetarian diet?

Excess carbohydrates in the diet is one of the major reasons for weight gain i.e. cereal and toast for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, pasta for tea and other carb based snacks such as rice cakes and chocolate during the day. Excess carbs are easily stored as fat.

Any meal or snack high in carbohydrates generates a rapid rise in blood glucose. To adjust for this rise, the pancreas secretes the hormone insulin into the bloodstream, which lowers the glucose. Insulin is, though, essentially a storage hormone, evolved over those millions of years of humans prior to the agricultural age, to store the excess calories from carbohydrates in the form of fat in case of famine.

Insulin, stimulated by the excess carbohydrates in our overabundant consumption of grains, starches and sweets, is responsible for all those bulging stomachs and fat rolls in thighs and chins.

Top Tip for a vegetarian low carb diet - Get Protein into every meal. Protein comes in the form of meat, soy products, cheese and dairy products. However, most of these are in the form of animal proteins, which add greatly to the bad cholesterol in our bodies. Therefore we need to look for high quality proteins, in our diet, from non-animal sources.

Healthy Breakfast
What type of breakfast do you have? Is your breakfast made up entirely of carbohydrates? Really how healthy is your breakfast cereal? How much fibre does it contain? Look at alternatives to breakfast cereals and toast.

Make sure you eat breakfast.
If you don’t eat breakfast, you slow down your metabolism and send the body into “hoard mode,” thinking it’s starving because you’re going a long period of time frequently 8 to 10 hours or more, without food. Or you develop a craving later in the day. Try a protein shake packed with nutrients, hunger busting soy protein and complex carbohydrates instead of skipping breakfast.

Find alternatives to carbohydrate based snacks
The supermarkets are full of carbohydrate snacks. Snacks such as rice cakes, chocolate bars, crisps and other bars where the principal ingredient is carbohydrate. Check the special offers, how many are carb based snacks? Why? Its a high profit item with low cost raw material. Take a look at the GI index of carb based snacks such as rice cakes. Can you open a pack of biscuits and just eat one? Carbs = short term sense of fullness. Protein = long term appetite control. Consider alternative snacks

What about fruit?
Yes a healthy snack as contains fibre and nutrients but avoid snacking on fruit as an alternative to a balanced meal containing protein, especially if sensitive to carbohydrates. There are more nutrients in vegetables! Top tip - Get balance of snacks between fruit, protein and vegetables.

Body shape?
Science has discovered that not all people respond to food in the same way and an individual’s metabolic differences can make optimal nutrition difficult and elusive. Understanding how the body copes with carbohydrates could provide a solution and a new shape.

Build muscle with weight training or resistance exercise.
Muscle burns more calories than fat, and the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn, even at rest! Maintain a healthy muscle mass by maintaining adequate protein in your diet. Regard your muscles as fat furnaces.

Understanding Hypoglycemia
The ratio of macronutrients protein, carbohydrate, and fat-in the meals you eat is the key to permanent weight loss and optimal health.

Review Isotonic Drinks

September 07, 2008 By: blogger Category: Vitamin Supplements No Comments →

Running, swimming and cycling all come under the ‘endurance’ banner: performing strenuous exercise for long periods of time. These activities require carbs for energy and plenty of fluid to avoid dehydration. Sports drinks can help power exceptional performances by providing hydration – crucial when sweating over a long period of time, and an additional source of energy right when you need it.

For an exceptional performance, water alone is not enough. Your body is 60% water so, for results to be proud of, your body fluid must be kept at its optimum level. When you exercise, you sweat which increases the risk of suffering from the negative effects of dehydration such as headaches, fatigue and cramp. Today, isotonic drinks are the preferred choice for most fitness enthusiasts and athletes wanting exceptional hydration and energy. Isotonic drinks have a similar carbohydrate and electrolyte concentration to your body meaning they are absorbed as fast, if not faster, than water.

An osmolality level of 270-330 Mosm/kg in an isotonic drink helps to maintain the required concentration of electrolytes in your blood. Water alone has a very low osmolality level and it typically does not contain electrolytes. Although it is great for hydration, water also stimulates urine output which reduces its effectiveness during your exercise or any sporting performance. More information on Isotonic sports drinks.
