A National Holiday Taken For Chulalongkorn Day.
On October 23 of every year, Thailand celebrates Chulalongkorn Day. Chulalongkorn was one of the most important figureheads in Thai history, and the day is taken to commemorate the day of his death.
Thailand’s history of Chulalongkorn Day
After the death of King Mongkut, Chulalongkon ascended to the throne. He was the son of King Mongkut. His official name is Rama V, and he became a king at the young age of only 15. Rama V refers to him being the 5th monarch of Siam (as it was then called).
During his long 42 year rule, Chulalongkorn brought some sweeping changes to Thailand in the 19th century. It was Chulalongkon who was responsible for incorporating western-style government into Thai politics. He also spent this time improving relations between Siam and the major western powers such as France, Britain, USA and Russia. His children also went to be educated in the west.
Chulalongkon also pushed for the abolition of slavery and other modernisation such as building a new railway, and establishing post / telegraph systems. In the fields of health and education, the King also established a variety of public utilities.During the age of colonialism, the King had to adapt his foreign policy to maintain a balance between the opposing powers. By fostering good relations with other countries – particularly the bigger colonial powers – he was able to maintain Thailand’s independence throughout this difficult time.
His death in 1910 came as an enormous blow to a nation that had looked to him for guidance for so long. As the country’s most beloved king, his reign is still remembered today on 23rd October each year.
